🛑 Hazard Perception Test (HPT) – What You Need to Know

The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is a computer-based test required by NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). It assesses your ability to identify and respond to potential dangers on the road — a vital skill for safe driving.

If you're a learner driver in NSW, you’ll need to pass the HPT before progressing to your provisional P1 licence.

✅ What’s in the HPT?

  • Real-life video scenarios showing traffic situations

  • You’ll be asked when to respond (e.g., slow down, overtake, or turn)

  • No written answers — it’s all about timing your reactions

📍 Who Needs to Take It?

  • Learner drivers ready to move to a provisional licence (P1)

  • Overseas licence holders converting to a full NSW licence (in some cases)

🎯 Practice the HPT Online

The best way to prepare is by practicing real test scenarios:

📘 NSW Driving Test Handbook – Your Essential Guide

The NSW Driving Test Handbook, officially titled A Guide to the Driving Test, is a crucial resource for learner drivers preparing for the practical driving test in New South Wales. This comprehensive guide outlines the test structure, assessment criteria, and key skills required to pass.

✅ What's Inside:

  • Detailed explanation of the driving test process

  • Assessment areas: speed management, road positioning, decision making, hazard response, and vehicle control

  • Common reasons for test failure and how to avoid them

  • Tips for low-risk driving and observation techniques

  • Checklist for vehicle readiness and required

Understanding this handbook will help you know what examiners look for and how to demonstrate safe driving practices during the test.
